Running through Cobham is the delightful River Mole where the landmark red brick watermill has been located since its construction in 1822. For over 100 years the Grade II listed mill was in use until 1928 however, over time parts of the mill were demolished leaving just the grist mill in place. In 1993 after much work from the Cobham Mill Preservation Trust it was restored to working order and opened to the public becoming Surrey’s only fully working watermill.
Part of the Borough of Elmbridge Cobham has been an ancient settlement dating back to Roman times, known as ‘Covenham’ in the Domesday book which is thought to mean settlement in the curve of a river. Cobham was originally part of the extensive Chertsey Abbey estate. The Abermon family settled in the area in 1066 and near to Cobham lies Stoke d’Abermon which is taken from the family’s name.
Local historic houses and gardens include Cobham Park built in 1870s for Charles Combe, Church Stile House which dates from the early 17th century, The Old Mill House, Cedar House and nearby Painshill Park which is a visionary Grade I listed 18th-century landscape garden created by the Honourable Charles Hamilton.
Famous 19th residents included Matthew Arnold the poet and Vernon Lushington who lived at Pyports, he was a lawyer along with being a patron and friend to key figures of the time William Morris, Charles Darwin and Thomas Hardy. The 20th century up until 1960 saw large urbanisation of Cobham with many historic building demolished being replaced with more contemporary buildings. In recent years the opening of Chelsea Football Clubs training ground on its 140 acre site in 2007 has seen further development of the local area.
Today’s famous residents include many Chelsea Football Club players who live close by in the exclusive private estates, with such a significant international community Cobham provides good links to London and surrounding airports.
