Glamour and Sparkle made this Surrey Kitchen Shine.
THE CHALLENGE
Desire for a larger open-plan kitchen was this Surrey family’s ambition when deciding to extend their Victorian home. Somewhere the whole family could get together to eat, relax and entertain.
Layout
Exploiting the long garden they added a 6.5m extension, with the inclusion of their old kitchen this gave them an impressive 9.6m x 4.75 m space. Now they could create a separate utility room and open-plan kitchen, dining and family room all connected to the panoramic views of the garden.
They approached Kate to collaborate on this impressive design and installation. She helped them reimagine the space understanding what they wanted to achieve. “This was a dream kitchen, a lot of thought went into the design and materials to fluidly link both the inside and outside spaces,” explains Kate.
THE SOLUTION
Cabinetry
Initially they were looking for pale grey gloss finish doors with a dramatic contrasting tone. Looking through the sample doors at the showroom in Shepperton they were instantly attracted to furniture from Pyram. Selecting two tones, pale powder grey doors with a dramatic contrasting Hacienda dark grained wood effect door.
A streamlined handless design keeps the cabinetry looking sleek and chic. Incorporating finger rails allowed the doors to overhang by 30mm making them easy to pull open. Kate says “This is both practical and aesthetically pleasing in the overall design.” Built in appliances continue the contoured feel.
Storage was also a priority for this family home. A bank of tall deep storage larders with internal shelving was designed and positioned down one side of the room. As the room benefits from natural light it was decided to utilise the same Hacienda dark grained wood doors. “These are available in different grain directions, the design incorporated the vertical grain on the larder units and horizontal grain on the drawers” explains Kate.
THE RESULT
Surfaces
On the wish list was also a feature island. This gave an eye catching focal point to the room and enabled the design to have a creative rather than built in effect. Positioned within the island was essential extra storage and the hob with a subtle ceiling extractor above. Designer white Corian worktops 70mm deep seamlessly flow from the floor to the worktop on the island, giving distinct diversity to the other kitchen doors.
A shimmer sparkle in Elephants trunk added to the toughened glass on the walls giving a hint of glamour and shine but also a practical surface for a busy family kitchen. The overall result is a dramatic but welcoming social space.
Appliances
The appliances had already been purchased by the client before coming to see Sanctuary Kitchens, Kate was happy to incorporate these into the design and install them.
Lighting and Accessories
Task lighting was incorporated including under-cupboard lighting which was factory fitted into the carcase eliminating the need for a pelmet.
A feature row of pendant lights were also positioned over the island helping visually define the kitchen and family areas.
“Love this company. If you are serious about having a seamless, efficient service, this is the company to use. Kate knows her stuff and is brilliant at producing exactly what the clients envisage.”
